About the Practitioner - Insight

"The study of Natural & Complementary Medicine in Australia has been challenging. First there
are the many biases, then the judgements, and finally the "gap" between the pharmaceutical industry
and what natural supplements are able to do.

At one end of the spectrum exists the purists, passionately defending their absolute convictions in
the non medical practices - and the other are the medical sceptics, with their harsh criticisms and
conservative dogma.

The bridge between ‘drugs’ and ‘natural medicines’ is difficult, as if they are directly opposing each
other. Somewhere the system fails to acknowledge that the aim of both medicines is the same - the health
benefit of the patient. Sometimes a drug is necessary. Other times, natural plant substances such as
sterols, gums or resins prove to be wonderfully effective (ie. in high cholesterol) with much less
of the side effects of their chemical equivalents.

In amongst the fads and ‘quick buck’ natural medicinal schemes, I continually search for efficacious
answers that are solid and founded where possible on biochemical science, or have a history of results.
There are many quantifiable studies on the power if herbal and nutritional medicines - when you search
for them.

Insight into the complex interactions between the effects of diet, toxins, lifestyle, the mind, emotions,
and the inevitable genetic factor has always been the core of my inquiry. I also seek to acknowledge the
power of Eastern medicinal approaches that work with meridians and Qi - a force that though not seen by
scientific minds, continues to show me that sometimes answers to health and healing lie in between science
and the subtler realms.

In my humble opinion natural health is two fold - one hand there is the art of healing - whilst in the other
there is the knowledge of medicinals, applications of techniques their therapeutic effects.v Natural remedies
mimic the essential truth that we are not synthetic. It could be that the resurgence in Natural Medicine
reflects a need to reconnect to substances that truly support our cells & tissues, when our lifestyles
constantly demand so much of them.

Complementary Medicines have shown me to be powerful tools to help reconnect the individual to their
innate sense of wellness, in a world that can lose touch with the value and potency of nature's forces."
