Chinese Medicine - Ancient Healing Art vs Contemporary Science?
The underlying concepts of oriental medicine is the belief in the innate healing capacity of the
human being, which is organic in nature and thus a part of and influenced by natures elements,
from within and without. It searches into the depth of diseases, and does not treat the human
body superficially.
It is interesting how medicine has not yet been able to validate what this ancient art has
recorded for years - though correlation’s between Chinese Medicine theory & Western
Medicine symptomatology do exist. For example, the Heart meridian runs down the arms
- known for centuries in Chinese Medicine, yet in Western Medicine the aetiology of
how arm pain preceded heart attack had not been quantifiable .
The ancient healers understood these body’s disharmonies on a more subtle level, far prior
to our scientific inquiry. The question remains - What did they understand that our reasoning
minds do not?
Chinese Tools in Diagnosis
Chinese diagnostic methods to read the the quality of the Qi/energy and organs systems of
the body through the 12 organ pulses. Tongue diagnosis is a traditional method of discovering
imbalances in minerals, tissues and organs through the tongue coating and quality.
5 Element Therapy.
In every person there is an element that has a tendency to deficiency with particular
health consequences. The aim is to strengthen this element, through diet and treatment,
so it can support the work of all the others. This is a highly simplified description
on 5 Element principles.
Chinese Herbal Remedies.
Based on the founding principles of balancing Qi in the organs of the body - Chinese herbs come
in granulated or capsule form to maximise compliance. A complex system of herbal medicine that
tonifies the body deeply from within, concurrent to the modalities applied externally, (such as
Acupressure, Acupuncture or Tuina,) to reestablish equilibrium and maximise healing and restoration.
Chinese Remedial Techniques.
Cupping
Heat is placed inside a cup to create a vacuum which is then placed onto the skin creating a
suction effect. This is used to aid to move stagnation and tension in muscles as well as excess
heat or cold that is contained in the body. Used in conjunction with Chinese Herbal Salves applied
direct on the skin.
Chinese Medicine remains an intricate art and complementary medical practice. It excels in its
capacity to unravel the patterns preceding health conditions & the restoration of optimal vitality.
The active principle is to use one of a breadth of techniques to stimulate optimal wellness
by the art of self managing, preventing and curing the underlying cause of health imbalances.
Wellness and the 'Shen'

The alternative perspective
Eastern medicine continues to provoke inquiry, in the awareness of more than just the
physical aspects that may contribute to a health. Eastern medicine always has
somewhere buried in it, the respect and reverence for the individuals Mind or Spirit, and its
capacity to interact upon the total health and wellness of the person.
The concept that your inner self may be able to profoundly influence or support the outcomes of
health and healing is a giant leap away from scientific inquiry. Yet whether its a major life health
crisis, or a minor habitual condition, both 'mind' and 'body' are implicated in Eastern medicinal
approaches.
In Chinese Medicine this is referred to as the 'Shen', or 'Mind' or some use the word 'Consciousness'.
Oriental theory states that a persons health is visible in their state of 'Shen' which is indicated
through the quality of their eyes. If a persons 'Shen' is healthy , their eyes sparkle with vitality.
Disturbed Shen produces dull eyes, which seem to have a veil in front of them.
It is said that 'Shen' lives in the Heart and is nourished by the blood. 'Shen' is dependant on
the strength of the persons essence given to them at birth and nourished or depleted from their
choices in lifestyle, diet and activity as well as through the nourishment received (or not) through
interactions with people in their lives and their environment. These affect the Qi or life essence
that is further maintained via the spleen and stomach.
In Chinese Medicine, much energy is applied to the state of the blood, the heart, the kidneys
the spleen and the stomach. Vitality and healthy living is more than just having a body that is
able to take you from A to B, it's about the quality of that journey and whether you make that
journey dragging your feet, or with a joyful strong stride & inner smile.
